  1. At the top of your “must-visit” list climb to the crown of the iconic lighthouse in Harbour Town where visitors can learn about the island’s rich natural history and enjoy spectacular views of the green Harbour Town Golf Links, regal Harbour Town Yacht Basin and expansive Calibogue Sound.
  2. Hilton Head Horseback RidingOr you can find everything you ever wanted to know about Hilton Head’s heritage and history at the interactive Coastal Discovery Museum located on the north end of the Island. Learn how Native Americans, the English, the Spanish, the French and the Gullah lived on the island before the land developers arrived. Take a walk on the boardwalks between the butterfly enclosures and tranquil marshes and learn about cast-netting and alligators—your kids will forget those online status updates and focus on nature.  
  3. You could take a quick boat trip to Daufuskie Island to get a glimpse of what the Sea Islands were like before bridges and causeways led to land development. Many native residents of Daufuskie who have made their living oystering and fishing for decades are descendants of freed slaves.
  4. For active families, enjoy an eco-kayak trip or stand-up paddle board tour through salt marsh estuaries where you may see bald eagles, hawks and osprey. Other water activities such as dolphin sightseeing tours and sailing trips are especially popular with the young and the old alike. Sport fishing, photographic cruises and catamaran cruises are also available.  
  5. Kite flying is a popular winter activity. Just head to the beach where it’s always breezy. The wide-open spaces and a flat beach terrain and make the perfect spot to fly a kite.
  6. Be sure to visit Aerial Adventure Hilton Head where you can choose from 50 in-the-tree challenging activities on six self-guided, harnessed and helmeted courses ranging from easy to hard. They offer something for everyone whether you are a five-year-old child or an experienced Marine. Thrill seekers also will enjoy ZipLine Hilton Head, an eco-tourism attraction offering an adventuresome canopy tour. The island’s only zip line; ZipLine Hilton Head is one experience the entire family will be talking about for years to come. The two-hour tour takes visitors on an exciting canopy ride through the tops of sea pines and ancient Live Oaks while offering views of the water, marshes and boats of Broad Creek. Soar on eight zip lines inter-connected by platforms and trees. Professional ZipLine personnel attach the safety equipment so visitors can relax while flying through the trees and marveling at the natural beauty which makes Hilton Head so special.
  7. Ride a horse, or just pet one at Lawton Stables. Take an escorted Western-style trail ride through the beautiful forest preserve in the heart of Sea Pines Plantation. Trail rides are available to visitors eight years and older. For the younger set, Lawton Stables offers pony rides around the corral. The horses and ponies at Lawton Stables are friendly and will stand at the fence to greet visitors. If you have carrots or apples, you can meet Harley, the Clydesdale at the Paddock for a snack. Be sure to visit Lawton Stables’ small animal farm which is free to Sea Pines visitors. Residents include llamas, goats, sheep, donkeys, pot-bellied pigs, chickens, rabbits and a pet deer named “Callie.”
  8. If you are looking for some indoor activities, you can always take in a movie. Hilton Head has three movie theaters: Park Plaza Cinema with six screens located near the main gate to Sea Pines, the Coligny Theater which is usually showing something a little move avant garde and North Ridge Plaza Theater, 10 screens and all 10 of the now have recliner style seating, not enjoying Fast and Furious 6 as much as the first 5?   North Ridge and their new seats offer the best napping on Hilton Head Island.
  9. The Sand Box on Pope Avenue is an interactive Children’s Museum and offers a great time for the younger kids and adults on a rainy day, or for that matter any day. It’s interactive so get ready to get involved. Your kids will love pretending to steer the pirate ship, land an airplane or create a masterpiece in their art room. Other exhibits include future builders, an aquarium, a junior bankers area and many more.
  10. You can also visit the Batter’s Box, an indoor batting cage in Southwood Plaza. Work out the kinks in your swing, find out if you can hit an 80 mph fastball, or work the slo-pitch softball swing to get back in shape for spring.
